Quiver

you stood there
watching me
wondering, wondering
and I stood behind
an average face
quivering

I’ve always wanted to see
the other side of me
and it’s okay
if you don’t understand
what I mean

I took a walk
and I didn’t look behind
because I didn’t want to see
just what you wanted me to

how dare you leave me breathless
on this road, quivering
these words I sing are meaningless
and they leave me quivering
quivering

and when you asked me
I said
more than you wanted me to

I took a walk
and I didn’t look behind
because I wouldn’t let you see
what you mean to me

how dare you leave me breathless
on this stage, quivering
these words I sing are meaningless
and they leave me quivering

quivering
more than you wanted me to

A Word of Grace (December 2006)

it’s in her style
paths of words streaming
seeming
beaming
their peace upon us all
as we sing out delight
at the voice in our heads
perhaps mouthed in pain
or wreathing
or the simple hurt of breathing
barely there and yet
a final stanza’s set
forgiving all we weren’t

unopened in the eyes of many
sitting all alone
in waiting and impatience
wondering at such
use of passive tense
for not all eyes can see
splendid verbose beauty
but sit here we

gliding fingers highlight text
whose passion rises ours
left only to second-guess
whose life personified
yours or his
hers or mine
ignorant of time
and so it settles
her adorning mind

(My sister had a different interpretation for this poem when she read it; she thought it was about the Virgin Mary….. have another read and you might see why she, and I now too, can glean that meaning from it…..)

Inspection

“you don’t know me,
and you don’t even care”

breath is disappearing
somewhere deep inside of me
somewhere numb and bleeding
there’s a whole lung gone
I knew I couldn’t be wrong
and now I die inside
wondering wondering why
the birds are circling
they knew all along
a poor idiot like me
was sure to be a target
so spare me my excellence
spare me my time
just spare me

I liked it when I was young
innocence was fine
nothing expected of me
and I upstaged life
but when did the stage fall
when did I lose hope
when will I breathe again
please, let me breathe again
please let me be
me
