I’m excited. Filled with an internal energy. I feel like powerwalking in the cool night outside, but I think my legs would collapse beneath me. I went for a run today.
I don’t normally run. I actually used to hate running long distances; I was always a sprinter. Endurance in running was not my thing. “Runners’ high” was a myth. I could play 5+ hour intense tennis matches, I just couldn’t run the 200-metre race without getting incredibly winded. “It uses different muscles,” people have suggested, I suppose to make me feel better.
So today I went for a run. I left around 6:45 or so, and came back at 9:15. I didn’t run that whole time, by any means, but partway through it, I did experience a bit of a preview of what “runners’ high” might be like. I felt my muscles were tense, but for some reason I wasn’t that out of breath. If I’d been feeling lazy, I might’ve slowed to a walk, assuming I was out of breath and just didn’t realize it yet….. but I kept going. I even passed another runner! I couldn’t believe it. The music probably helped a bit, but I don’t remember exactly what it was, so it obviously wasn’t a crucial element. I’m still stunned by this radical change. And inspired. I’m thinking I should do this again in a couple days, to see if I can replicate that feeling.
This past Wednesday, I went with a friend to the Coldplay concert at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
There has been a lot of talk about the disappointment of some fans for various reasons, so I’d just like to add something of my own to the discussion. Feel free to comment whether you agree, disagree, or add your own thoughts. Continue reading
Today I went to Miller Hall’s geology museum, just for a visit. It’s been a while since I’ve been, and seeing as I pulled another all-nighter last night, it was raining, and the lights looked so inviting, I figured it was about time.
I started off by looking at the selection of rocks and minerals used in Geology class for first year engineers, which involved a little wistful reflection of those times so many years ago when we had to perform all the tests on the samples to determine their properties and later their names. I always have loved Geology, but I was going through so much during that time, I couldn’t even enjoy it then. 😦 I moved on to the end of the hall, where they had a few little samples of random rocks, and then I backtracked to my favourite part: the collection of meteorites. I had my music on high, and just immersed myself. It was wonderful. Peaceful. There’s also the additional effect it has on me, based on feelings I have toward nature (see the post directly below this for more info on that), so it was really a good mental break.
I then moved to the main room, where there appeared to be a class trip for some French-speaking kids, maybe grade 5 or so. I turned my music up and toured around, stopping at some of my favourites — the tall amethyst sliced-in-half-geode, galena, pyrite, azurite, the gorgeous chalcopyrite, molybdenum, smithsonite, sodalite, tourmaline, and of course all kinds of quartz….. and yes, I did just go to a random minerals site alphabetically 🙂 There were, of course, many others, but far be it from me to remember what they were. I’m always kind of surprised they don’t have (or maybe I just can’t find it) one of my favourites, lab-made bismuth. I had one once, and it disappeared somewhere, but it had what I just found out is called “hopper” qualities — where basically the mineral forms an empty cube without a top, and then stacks these box-like structures all over itself in really neat designs. It’s also got some iridescence going on, which is always pretty neat. Oh, and there was ulexite, which I love to look at because it has fiber-optic properties. Very cool.
I love just going to places like that randomly, it’s so inspirational and relaxing at the same time. It was also nice to see some of the children fascinated in the minerals, while the others ran around yelling. Haha, I guess it brought me back to my youth….. not a bad place to visit every once in a while….. 🙂
The sky was really cool today.
I never quite know how the weather’s going to be when I get up, even if I check my Weather Network toolbar thingy on my computer, so it’s always a bit of a gamble in terms of coat choice this time of year. I went with my brown Fall jacket, and was glad of it. As soon as I opened the door I was greeted with a warm cool breeze (cool because it’s Fall and it’s expected to be a bit cool, and warm because it had an unexpected warmth still left in it). Over the park trees and over the Queen’s buildings, I could see in the distance blue clouds. That nice, rich Russian Blue Cat kinda blue. The kind, had it been cold outside, you would have expected to be delivering snow. Instead, the sun was shining, the wind fiesty, and it was a perfect beginning to the day.
I actually was slightly resenting the fact that I had class to attend, because I just felt like walking around listening to my music all day 🙂 I might still do that, for a bit at least. I’ve had an overall pretty crummy past few days, though I shouldn’t complain as it’s probably mostly my own fault! Haha, that’s life. But nothing makes me feel better when I’m down than a good walk. It makes me wonder about next year; if I move, I’ll have to think about that when deciding where to live…..
Yes, now I’m thinking about that, I definitely need to walk. Definitely time to go down to the water: windy, sunny, cloudy, somewhat warm (season-considering), and some lifey stuff to think about……
Off I go….. 🙂
