Bird Identification Link

Hello all!

I recently was awoken by two little brown striped birds atop my boyfriend’s terrace wall, chirping and singing merrily while I wondered what the heck they were.  I thought they might be sparrows since they looked like a “regular bird” and didn’t really know many others that looked the same.  I became curious though, when their calls were all wacky and my rudimentary search online for even song sparrow calls were all repetitive and not at all the same as what I’d heard.

I posted my quest on Facebook to identify the calls, asking for any links people had.  My friend Laura L. sent me this link.  Well, it didn’t take very long before I discovered what I’d seen were Pine Siskins.  Here is a sample of what they sound like from that link.  Here is what they look like.  I don’t remember seeing any yellow though, so they might have been females or young males.  Still, they were very cute and happy-sounding!  I might see if we’re allowed to put up thistle bird feeders……   😉

Ladybugs

I feel bad for male ladybugs.  They are in a constant state of emasculation.

(I wonder if emasculation used to be “demasculation” and then they forgot the “d”.  Nope, apparently not.  But apparently it means “to deprive of effectiveness”.  Ouch.)

Some people call ladybugs ladybirds.  As if there are gentlemanbirds and ladybirds, but when you get to ladybirds you’re now into bugs.  How did that happen?  I like bugs.

You Stay

reaching for the crown
but the glass has cracked
and the leaves fall down
tryin’ to reach the fruit
but the birds have come
or they’re spoiled with worms
and when you lift your arms
you feel the bones
grate inside
when you lift the blue
your stomach turns
become aware

run away
she tells you to run away
she tells you to run away
and you stay

it’s mis’rable you know
but you turn your eyes
back to your mind
every road that’s paved
you deny

go back to the trees
that you can hear
whisper back
sleeping on the needles
and the pine cones
scratch your back

if you run away
when you need to
run away
if you run away
don’t come back

Inspection

“you don’t know me,
and you don’t even care”

breath is disappearing
somewhere deep inside of me
somewhere numb and bleeding
there’s a whole lung gone
I knew I couldn’t be wrong
and now I die inside
wondering wondering why
the birds are circling
they knew all along
a poor idiot like me
was sure to be a target
so spare me my excellence
spare me my time
just spare me

I liked it when I was young
innocence was fine
nothing expected of me
and I upstaged life
but when did the stage fall
when did I lose hope
when will I breathe again
please, let me breathe again
please let me be
me
