Solution for “SPSS Error Code 2063 Getting Data”

Hello all.

Just troubleshot (haha) my way out of an SPSS issue, and since the Interwebs couldn’t help me out, I’ll post it here for anyone else who might need it.

I was trying to import an Excel file that was basically a copy and paste from a different file.  So the file itself was pretty new, not like it’d been worked over a lot.  I tried to import it, however, and got the following error message:

GET DATA /TYPE=XLSX  /FILE=*****
/SHEET=name ‘RawData’
/CELLRANGE=full
/READNAMES=on
/ASSUMEDSTRWIDTH=32767.
>Error.  Command name: GET DATA
>(2063) Error reading information for sheet.
>* Sheet Name: “RawData”
>This command not executed.
DATASET NAME DataSet1 WINDOW=FRONT.

The error, as I could figure out, was probably due to me having calculations lower down in my sheet.  I copied and pasted values into a brand new sheet, and that imported just fine.  If you’re having the same issue, try copy and pasting Values only into a new sheet and see if that helps.

The More You Know…..  😉

Had the same problem. Apparently I solved it by saving the excel file in 2003-oder format.

Interesting! I’ll try that next time and see if that does anything to the equations….. Thanks for the idea!

By the way, your name/e-mail looks really familiar….. did you by chance post somewhere else about this? (Or have you visited my site before?)

Can you perhaps solve my next problem? I have numbers like 0,7890437 in excel, but SPSS gives them as 0,0000
Do you know what happened here?

First of all, thanks so much for writing — I’m very glad to help 🙂

As to your other issue, I’m wondering if it might have to do with the decimal (these are decimal entries, right?) being represented as a comma. Try readjusting your number format in Excel first, copy-pasting values only into a new file or sheet, and importing that way. Good luck, and let me know how it goes! 🙂

This has often to do with importing an Excel 2007 file. In case this is true, just open your Excel file and store it in the Excel 97-2003 format.
Then try importing it with SPSS… it always worked for me.

Yeah, Thanks a lot, it really does not work in *.xlsx-Format but in *.xls – Strange, but ok…

I googled help for this error and I got your post! What are the odds? Thanks so much! It’s so weird that copying and pasting values into the same sheet doesn’t work.

    • clio44 December 2, 2010 / 10:31 pm

That’s funny! Although I’ve found a lot of SPSS help is in the form of posts from users (versus actual company help)….. that’s why I post when I come up with a solution! Glad to help Erinn, hope you’re doing well 🙂

Please anyone help – I administered a survey with two 4 point likert scale reponses to one statement – one demand and the other supply – I want to use SPSS Ver 18 to analyse the Gap – Using Julie Pallant book but to no avail.

    Thanks in anticipation

Are you thinking of doing a correlation?

Hi! Interesting, what works for me, was to save spreadsheet as 97-2003. I´m new at using spss. And this blog was really helpful!

    Thanks 😀

Thank you! Just had this problem – and yes, you fixed it!

  12. xof June 1, 2011 / 6:35 am

Try saving your excel files as txt tab delimited – if you have bigger data (more than 65k rows and smth about 256 cols) than you cannot do it as xls (97/2003)

Add me to the list of people who you helped with this problem. Thank you!

Merçi d’avance me venir en aide.

  22. Javier Figueroa October 1, 2020 / 3:49 pm

I had the same error but with me the solution was different and that is that in SPSS 26 when you import or want to open an excel database, a dialog box appears and asks you for various parameters.

I was including the parameter: Remove leading spaces from string values.

Just disable it and it ran fine.

    Another possible solution.

    Sincerely,

    Javier Figueroa
